What is generally the minimum age to start lessons?
Currently ATL have pupils ranging from 6 years of age up to the eldest whom is 86! Please contact us and we can advise.
Is it best to start learning on Acoustic or Electric Guitar?
It is generally best to start learning on Acoustic.
Is it easier to play the Bass Guitar compared to 6 string?
Yes, the bass is easier in some ways. For example you don’t have to learn any chords. However, the bass can be heavy for the younger player. It is also not as melodic as a 6 string, so it would generally sound more interesting playing with other musicians or a backing track.
Are the lessons one to one?
Yes, they are 1 to 1 for beginners. However, we can accommodate group lessons
How often should I take lessons?
Generally one 30 minute weekly lesson is the most suitable. That way you get used of the regular lesson each week. However some students like to have a 60 minute lesson every week.
How long should I practice for?
The more time you spend playing the instrument or learning to sing the better you will become. So aim for a minimum of 15 minutes daily to start with. Then try to increase up to at least 30 minutes. After a while you could try to increase to 60 (or more) minutes daily, as you will have more to play & practice the time will not seem as long.
I am really interested in learning to play a stringed instrument, but I am not sure what to try. I don’t want to waste time and money on buying an instrument and then finding out that it is just not right for me. What should I do?
This is very common. It would be a good idea to come along for a lesson and try a few various instruments. That way you will hopefully find something that suits you. I can then give advice on buying.
How do I pay for lessons?
You can pay cash at the start of each lesson. Cheque minimum of £30, BAC’s or Pay Pal
I really love singing, but I can’t tell what songs suit me best?
When you have your first singing lesson, you will be guided in the right direction, with suggestions as to what singers and songs to listen to.
Do I have to book a course of lessons?
No, you can pay for single lessons as you go. However if you have regular weekly lessons you will be offered a convenient slot each week.
I have just learned a new song to sing but I do not have a backing track to practice with?
That’s no problem either, we have access to 1000’s of professional backing tracks which we can get for you.
I love singing along with my favorite singers that I have on my ipod, However, I don’t think vocal tuition would be right for me because I really don’t want to learn all the scales and arpeggio exercises?
We teach a lot of students that are exactly like you. Just bring your favorite track along on your ipod. We will then decided if the song is suitable for you. If so, we will proceed to learn it.
I want to surprise my future spouse on our wedding day with a song that he/she loves. Are you able to help me learn just that one song? Or do I have to learn scales, arpeggios and other songs that I don’t want to learn before I get to that one song?
Again, this is a very common request. As long as I think you have the potential. Then we can make it work.
I have played guitar for quite a while now, and I know most of the scales, chords & theory. However, I have been trying to learn this particular song for ages and I am simply not getting anywhere with it. Are you able too help me transcribe it?
Yes, this is something that I enjoy. Just bring the song on a CD and I have the facility to ‘slow down’ the track if we need too.
I have played guitar for many years, I am confident with scales, chords & most of the theory. However, I seem to be in a bit of a rut at the moment. I need someone too help me get the most out of my playing and perhaps suggest a practice schedule?
Sure thing, give me a call. I’m sure I can help you to get you out of that rut. Perhaps the RGT exams might give you a new motivation & goal?
