question mark 01FAQ's

Over the many years of teaching thousands of students we have been asked all sorts of questions. This page serves to answer the most commonly asked questions - if you have a question that is not answered here, then please feel free to call us on 07515 358393 or click here for our quick contact form.

What is generally the minimum age to start lessons?

Currently ATL have pupils ranging from 6 years of age up to the eldest whom is 86!  Please contact us and we can advise.

Is it best to start learning on Acoustic or Electric Guitar?

It is generally best to start learning on Acoustic.

Is it easier to play the Bass Guitar compared to 6 string?

Yes, the bass is easier in some ways. For example you don’t have to learn any chords. However, the bass can be heavy for the younger player. It is also not as melodic as a 6 string, so it would generally sound more interesting playing with other musicians or a backing track.

Are the lessons one to one?

Yes, they are 1 to 1 for beginners. However, we can accommodate group lessons

How often should I take lessons?

Generally one 30 minute weekly lesson is the most suitable. That way you get used of the regular lesson each week. However some students like to have a 60 minute lesson every week.

Should I practise much between lessons?

Yes, this is really important. Daily practice is the best.

How long should I practice for?

The more time you spend playing the instrument or learning to sing the better you will become. So aim for a minimum of 15 minutes daily to start with. Then try to increase up to at least 30 minutes. After a while you could try to increase to 60 (or more) minutes daily, as you will have more to play & practice the time will not seem as long.

I am really interested in learning to play a stringed instrument, but I am not sure what to try. I don’t want to waste time and money on buying an instrument and then finding out that it is just not right for me. What should I do?

This is very common. It would be a good idea to come along for a lesson and try a few various instruments. That way you will hopefully find something that suits you. I can then give advice on buying.

How do I pay for lessons?

You can pay cash at the start of each lesson. Cheque minimum of £30, BAC’s or Pay Pal

I really love singing, but I can’t tell what songs suit me best?

When you have your first singing lesson, you will be guided in the right direction, with suggestions as to what singers and songs to listen to.

Do I have to book a course of lessons?

No, you can pay for single lessons as you go. However if you have regular weekly lessons you will be offered a convenient slot each week.

I have just learned a new song to sing but I do not have a backing track to practice with?

That’s no problem either, we have access to 1000’s of professional backing tracks which we can get for you.

I love singing along with my favorite singers that I have on my ipod, However, I don’t think vocal tuition would be right for me because I really don’t want to learn all the scales and arpeggio exercises?

We teach a lot of students that are exactly like you. Just bring your favorite track along on your ipod. We will then decided if the song is suitable for you. If so, we will proceed to learn it.

I want to surprise my future spouse on our wedding day with a song that he/she loves. Are you able to help me learn just that one song? Or do I have to learn scales, arpeggios and other songs that I don’t want to learn before I get to that one song?

Again, this is a very common request. As long as I think you have the potential. Then we can make it work.

I have played guitar for quite a while now, and I know most of the scales, chords & theory. However, I have been trying to learn this particular song for ages and I am simply not getting anywhere with it. Are you able too help me transcribe it?

Yes, this is something that I enjoy. Just bring the song on a CD and I have the facility to ‘slow down’ the track if we need too.

I have played guitar for many years, I am confident with scales, chords & most of the theory. However, I seem to be in a bit of a rut at the moment. I need someone too help me get the most out of my playing and perhaps suggest a practice schedule?

Sure thing, give me a call. I’m sure I can help you to get you out of that rut. Perhaps the RGT exams might give you a new motivation & goal?

What if I am unable to make a lesson?

Cancellation policy is 48 hours notice, otherwise lesson fee will be forfeited. However, will try to offer you an alternative slot within that week.

I started playing the guitar on a self-taught basis. The problem was that I reached a level where from then on I could not seem to improve any further. That was why I decided to take professional tuition with Arthur. As a result I have become a more accomplished guitar player and have reached a level, which I could never have achieved on my own. My only regret is that I did not seek Arthur’s help sooner. On acoustic or electric guitar, if you are struggling to improve then I can highly recommend contacting Arthur James.

I’ve been singing with Linda for 7 years. As a young girl, I was very apprehensive when beginning singing lessons. However, Linda made be feel extremely welcome and comfortable in her studio. She helped develop my confidence as well as my vocal skills, which has benefitted me not just within my singing but with other aspects of my life. Linda and Arthur are a fantastic duo. Every year, I am a part of the amazing annual show in which we raise money for a chosen charity. Always the highlight of the year!. I would recommend Linda & Arthur to anyone wishing to kick start their musical career. 10/10 all around! Thank you Linda and Arthur for the great times and I’m looking forward to plenty more! Thanks, Dina

I have been taking guitar lessons from Arthur for several years and have found his ability to explain in simple terms even the most complex of musical theory very good. He is very patient and makes sure that I understand a particular principle before moving on. He is very enthusiastic about music and teaching. Many thanks, Trevor

Hi I’m 14 years old, I play guitar, sing & also write songs. I’ve been learning with Linda since late 2014. When I started lessons, I was very shy and didn’t have much confidence, however Linda really helped me gain confidence. When Linda finds a certain singer/band that your voice suits, she will encourage that. I’m a big Taylor Swift fan, so Linda encourages me to sing her songs. I love my singing lessons and feel I take something away from them every week, and a big part of that is all thanks to the lovely person that Linda is! I 100% recommend Linda to anyone who wants to improve their singing voice!

I have been having guitar lessons from Arthur for several years, and in that time have yet to ask him a question about either guitar playing or music theory that he is unable to answer. I can confidently recommend Arthur to anyone who would like to improve their playing. Thanks, Tony

I am 19 years old and have been singing at ATL Music Tuition for the last couple of years. Linda is a great singing coach. She is very encouraging and is forever trying to push me to try things out of my normal comfort zone in order to extend my repertoire. She is an excellent teacher to all ages. Thanks for everything, Georgina.

I have always loved the sound of the Pedal Steel Guitar and Arthur has taught me to read music and play this instrument from scratch. Arthur has supported me throughout the years (started learning with Arthur in 2007) and I really don’t think I could have done it without him. Many thanks, Derek

I’ve been having singing lessons with Linda since the beginning of May 2015. In that time, I have progressed greatly in many areas of my singing & I have noticed a huge difference in the way I sing. It has given me a massive confidence boost! I cannot thank Linda enough for helping me continue to improve every week. She is an amazing teacher. Thank you, Chloe
